Summertime should be filled with children playing with friends, going to camp, and sleeping in. Having a break from school should be a relaxing time kids look forward to. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all children. For some, time away from school means time away from reliable meals. With 1 in 6 children experiencing food insecurity in Central Florida (Feeding America, 2024), we must continue to advocate for them and connect them to meals, allowing them to continue having fun and being kids this summer. They should be deciding which fun activities to choose from that day, not figuring out where their next meal is going to come from.
Summer BreakSpot collaborates with schools, nonprofit organizations, parks, libraries, and other community partners to provide nutritious meals for children 18 and younger during their summer break. Breakfast, lunch/suppers, and snacks are provided at no cost, with no application necessary, at over 3,000 participating locations throughout Florida. These meals include milk, fruit, vegetables, grains, and protein to provide kids and teens with balanced options to eat Monday through Friday when schools are released for the summer.
These locations are in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These organizations provide guidance, support, and training to participating sponsors, offer reimbursements for meals served, promote site locations and their distribution hours, and assist in identifying areas of higher need (Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, 2025).
Participating locations can be found on the 2025 Summer BreakSpot site map. If there are no meal sites in your area or concerns about transportation, please don’t hesitate to contact InfoFNW@FDACS.gov or 1-800-504-6609 for assistance. Let’s work together to ensure no child goes hungry this summer.
