Practitioner Engagement

Practitioner Engagement: Update August 2023

Working Group information

  • Working Group Lead: Dr. Laura Chilcutt, Nemours Children’s Health
  • Working Group Objective:  Intentionally connect with healthcare practitioners through interviews or focus groups to better understand their needs and challenges around screening for Food Insecurity, and gauge what materials and approaches would be most helpful.

Progress Updates

  • The PE working group has been building out a strategy for engaging with healthcare practitioners around FI screening. They reviewed the work of the Landscape Analysis working group and the survey tool that group attempted to disseminate. The PE working group has decided to move forward with a more qualitative approach, focus groups.
  • The group has agreed to facilitate three rounds of focus groups with different audiences. They believe each audience will be able to speak to specific challenges, gaps, or successes around FI screening.
    • Frontline Staff: This group would involve staff who are actively involved in screening patients. This may be a physician, but may also include nurses, medical assistants, social workers, registration staff, etc.
    • Practice Managers: This group would include practice managers to gauge an understanding of organizational practices.
    • Hospital System Leadership: This group would be to better understand the vision for FI screening at a system level. The goal would be to facilitate this group last, and potentially bring findings from the first two focus groups.

Next Steps

Begin recruiting for the focus groups – specifically frontline staff and practice managers.
