Nutrition Education Resources: Update August 2023

Working Group information

  • Working Group Lead: Angela Corona, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida
  • Working Group Objective: Evaluate existing nutrition education resources for patients, developing a curated set of evidence based and culturally appropriate materials that would benefit patients and healthcare practitioners in Central Florida.

Progress Updates

  • The Nutrition Education Resources working group spent time reviewing key data points about Central Florida, including demographics and chronic disease rates. That information, as well as group discussion, led towards the group setting a scope for this work. They will curate nutrition education resources helpful for managing chronic diseases as well as primary prevention resources that teach nutrition basics.
  • There has been much discussion in the group about the need to not just curate existing resources, but to also learn more about healthcare practitioner’s training in regard to nutrition, and any support they might need in understanding basic nutrition principles.
  • To better gauge understanding of healthcare practitioners, the NE working group collaborated with the Practitioner Engagement working group to identify questions for focus groups that would help understand gaps in practitioner knowledge, as well as understand basic practices around sharing resources with patients.
  • The group has also put together a Nutrition Education Classes survey, to be disseminated in August and September 2023, to assess the landscape of nutrition education classes offered in the community. This list will be reviewed and ultimately shared with healthcare providers, so they know how to connect their patients to classes in the community.

Next Steps

  •  Disseminate the Nutrition Education classes survey.
